A lot of people make the claim that while Marvel has better characters, DC has better stories. I have never been one to believe this myself, and Iron Fist definitely goes to help. The Immortal Iron Fist brings us the story of Daniel Rand, a man whose parents died when he was very young and who grew up in the ancient city of K'un-L'un, learning mystical martial arts and eventually gaining the power of the Iron Fist. In this excellent sleeper hit crafted by Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker, we learn more about the legends of the Iron Fist and the true power behind it. Previously, Danny Rand had been the only person ever to weild the power of the Iron Fist, but we soon learn that there have been 66 different men and women to hold the title of Iron Fist. We are also introduced to Orson Randall, the previous Iron Fist, who helps shine even more light on the mystical city of K'un-L'un and opens up more doors to Iron Fists history than we thought possible.

I like pretty much everything Brubaker has ever done, and Fraction is a recent favorite of mine due to his run on Invincible Iron Man. Their writing talents combined with David Aja's artwork create a gritty and (dare I say it?) noir-ish style to the story telling. With a whole world of brand new characters, Immortal Iron Fist is a great read for people who are not that familiar with the character but have always been intrigued on some level due to his status as a classic hero (especially thanks to his involvement in the Avengers and Heroes For Hire). While neither of the authors are the current writer for Iron Fist, the book still carries on strong and picks up exactly where Brubaker and Fractions story ends in Volume 3. It's a great read, though, and you can easily go into it without outside knowledge of other superheroes.
